It's so much easier than you think

4/30/2020

I was recently talking with a delightful woman about a challenge she overcame with a simple mindset tweak. She is a self-proclaimed “nature lover” and always wants to do right by the planet. But when her landlord told her they’d be testing an optional compost system for the building, she said “no thanks.”

Why would someone say “no” to an initiative that would save 103 pounds of food waste from the landfill each year?

Because all the brain heard was “change” and change = hard.
Then preprogrammed thoughts filled her head like…

A message from the earth

4/23/2020

Picture
I got a message from the planet this morning.

She said it was for all of us, so here goes... [me translating for her]

She loves YOU and is glad YOU'RE here.
  • She wants you to know she's there for you & with you.
  • She is a living organism, just like you.
  • She has wants & desires and needs your help to fulfill them.

How can you help her fulfill those needs & wants?

Our earth is our only hope

4/22/2020

The first memory of Earth Day is saved in vivid technicolor. I was 12 years old, and my aunt and her friends took me into NYC for the festivities. At the beginning, I felt pure joy at the idea that the thousands of people walking the streets were like me. They too loved the earth and wanted to take care of her. I was not alone!

But as the day wore on, I noticed a lot of garbage on the ground and got really confused. How could all these nature lovers get together and leave a mess? It was literally the opposite of the day’s intention!

You have the power

“The pen is mightier than the sword.”  - Edward Bulwer-Lytton

The first time I heard it I was like, “Oh daumm, so true!”
Words have the power to heal, incite wars, make people fall in love. And, most unfortunately, to exert power and enforce the dominance of few while suppressing many.

Pandemic got you stressed?                      No worries, I've got a pill for that

4/9/2020

I often hear people say “there is no magic pill.”

Excuse me! I beg to differ.
There IS A MAGIC PILL.

It’s nature.

Okay, fine, it’s a magic pill for many ailments, but not the current global pandemic. But it will cure some of the side effects from social isolation like anxiety, sadness, and feelings of disconnection.

So much gray area

4/2/2020

Picture
You may have noticed that I rarely offer a yes-or-no stance on cultural misappropriation, in part because it’s a super complex, gray area type of situation.

Are there some things that are 100% obviously taboo? Absolutely!
Like black-face. Wrong. Uh-uh. No way.

Other things may feel a little more obscure to some folks, while being extremely obvious to others.

Life is worth the Embellishments

3/26/2020

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a LOT of really big moments in my life pass by with very little fanfare.

In fact, if I scan the imaginary book of my life, the print is not even bolded around meaningful things like getting my period, graduating from high school, and the death of my grandparents.

Ceremonies are the embellishments, the fancy script, the ALL CAPS in our mental memoire. They serve as speed bumps, shouting for you to slow down, pay attention, because this right here...

Time to honor Spring!

3/19/2020

124 years. With everything going on right now in the world, I feel like the universe is handing us a gift… an early rebirth to facilitate the letting go of the weight of darkness, viruses, fear, and politics.

And there’s no better way to call in a ‘new you’, then a nature based ceremony.
Ceremonies and rituals, big or small, are simply love and intention made visible.

They are acts of faith and gratitude.

They are contracts made between the Self, Spirit, and the non-human beings you share your life with, like the land you walk on each day, the birds you hear, and the water you drink.

Ceremonies are also one way to refuel your hope for a brighter future.

For all you folks that are newer-to-ceremony… If there’s ever a day to leap into the practice, it’s TODAY!

The Vernal (meaning fresh-new) Equinox (meaning equal night) is today March 19th.
If you’re thinking… “gosh it feels really early this year” it’s because it IS super early.

In fact, it's the earliest spring start date in

The Slick Nature of Palm Oil

2/25/2020

Palm Oil is highly praised for it's economy and affable nature by the biggest food companies in the world- so much so, that you can find it or it's derivatives, in 50% of the products we buy. But this cheap product comes at the very high cost of habitat loss, further endangering critical species. The complex drama rivals an M. Night Shyamalan film.

Nut Milk... Way Worse Than It Sounds

1/27/2020

*Transcript from my podcast, When You Know Better, You Do Better*

Mmmm, almond milk!
That delicious unassuming non-dairy drink starts out it’s life as an almond. And who doesn’t LOVE almonds?
Well I guess people with a tree nut allergy?

But other than that, who doesn’t LOVE almonds?
They’re super high in protein, loaded with fiber, oodles good fat, antioxidants, and Vitamin E - all of which has been linked to lower rates of cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimers.

Terms, Conditions, & other crap no one reads

I acknowledge that I'm living and working on stolen land. The original peoples of what's now called New York, as well as the rest of this continent, were wrongfully & forcibly removed from their lands, suffered death, physical, and emotional trauma, and their culture intentionally fractured. I understand that Native Americans are still here; strong and thriving. I offer my condolences those the past, present, and future indigenous peoples who experienced harm, at the hands of colonizers, the colonial system, and systemic racism. I promise to do my best to be an ally, abolitionist, and accomplice. To support reparations and healing, in not just words, but in action. I understand that this statement is imperfect and only the first step.
