Simple ways to Honor the Ancestors

10/26/2021

It's that time of year again!

When the veil thins between this world and the next... offering us the gift of more easily sending our love to our friends and family who have died in this place and reborn in that other place.

While many cultures have rich customs for ancestral honoring, If you grew up orphaned from your motherland and the culture that shaped your ancestors, you may be starving for this type of soul nourishment.

Below are some ideas that anyone can explore as ways to reach out and offer gratitude and adoration.

  • Take out photos of an ancestor(s) and tell your favorite stories about them.
  • Make their favorite foods or watch their favorite movie. You can even set a place for them at the table.
  • Write a love letter or thank you note, you always wish you'd written when they were alive. Then burry  it  outside or burn it.
  • Visit their favorite location and bring a picnic.
  • Visit their grave and spruce it up a bit by planting seeds or flowers.

Whatever you choose to do, make it authentic and intentional.

Terms, Conditions, & other crap no one reads

I acknowledge that I'm living and working on stolen land. The original peoples of what's now called New York, as well as the rest of this continent, were wrongfully & forcibly removed from their lands, suffered death, physical, and emotional trauma, and their culture intentionally fractured. I understand that Native Americans are still here; strong and thriving. I offer my condolences those the past, present, and future indigenous peoples who experienced harm, at the hands of colonizers, the colonial system, and systemic racism. I promise to do my best to be an ally, abolitionist, and accomplice. To support reparations and healing, in not just words, but in action. I understand that this statement is imperfect and only the first step.
